About Union Hand-Roasted Coffee

Union is the UK’s leading speciality coffee roaster. We source high-quality coffee direct from farmers in 14 countries via our pioneering model, Union Direct Trade. We roast all of our coffee on-site at our East London roastery and distribute to cafes, retailers and homes across the UK for coffee lovers to enjoy.

We are focused on quality and sustainability across everything we do. Our sourcing model won The Queen’s Award for Enterprise in 2017, and to date, we’ve had a positive impact on over 65,000 coffee farmers and their families. We have applied for B-Corp status and have a strong focus on environmental sustainability in our operations.

We’re proud roasters for some of Britain’s finest cafes and restaurants, as well as supplying to retailers to sell to home consumers. Our coffee is also available roasted fresh to order for coffee drinkers at home via our online shop. You can also find us up in our own cafe, Union Brew Lab, in the centre of Edinburgh.
Our inclusive, diverse team of Unionistas consists of around 70 people passionate about coffee, and most of this smiley bunch are based in East London, at our roastery (yes, it does smell like coffee!).

What you will be doing:

The Maintenance Team is responsible for the delivery of the Facilities and Infrastructure strategy which covers areas of facilities operation and maintenance, space management, energy management and maintenance and refurbishment projects.

The Maintenance Team aims to ensure that the quality, functionality and operation of the business and its infrastructure meets the needs of its users and supports both the production and general business activities.

As Maintenance Technician you will support the production and operations team to ensure that machinery has an effective PPM system in place. • Dealing with breakdowns in a timely manner to minimise disruption to our production lines.
  • Working with the Facilities Manager to build a PPM calendar and execute against the plan.
  • Ensuring potential issues are highlighted to the Facilities/Production Manager and plans to resolve those issues are put in place.
  • Providing assistance in the maintenance of our estate, including all general repairs and maintenance.
  • Carrying out regular checks and documenting them.

This role is very much hands on and given the nature of the job, some non-core hours and weekend working will be required.

You'll have:

  • Experience in mechanical and technical engineering
  • Sound understanding of PPM systems
  • Knowledge of electrical systems
  • Knowledge of H&S requirements and an ability to apply health and safety knowledge practically
  • Experience with coffee roasting systems and form, fill and seal machines would be desirable (though not essential as full training will be provided)
  • Previous experience in an FMCG environment would also be desirable

    You'll get:

    • Great, agile team to work with
    • The chance to be an active part of Union’s success in spreading the love of speciality coffee
    • Coffee training and knowledge
    • Cycle to Work scheme / Electric Car Scheme
    • 25 days of holiday plus the usual bank holidays
    • Generous sick leave and pay entitlement
    • Enhanced family/dependant leave and pay allowances
    • Paid time off for volunteering
    • Great coffee to drink at work – and free coffee to take home!

You’ll be part of our team helping us grow, in the right way – upholding our ethics and values, and having some fun on the way.

We are an equal opportunities employer and believe that diversity is a strength. We really care about creating a diverse and inclusive team and we welcome people from all backgrounds, with different perspectives, ideas and experiences to work with us.
