Experimental Roast Series

The long-anticipated 4th edition of our Campus Series is finally here and it’s a juicy one!
Flavour Category
fruit fruit
High quality coffee has wide ranging, naturally occurring taste notes. The dominant flavour profile in this coffee is Fruit. Many coffees have fruity notes, not surprising considering that coffee beans are seeds of a fruit. Naturally processed coffees are often fruity as the method enables more of the sugars in the fruit are absorbed in the beans.
Roast
This coffee is a light roast. Roast level influences the flavour and body of coffee. Darker roasts are fuller bodied, lighter roasts brighter. The beans are light brown in colour (unsurprisingly), it will retain more of the natural flavour of the coffee. This can result in a higher acidity and may often show more fruit and floral notes. This roast style means the quality of the coffee shines through the best.
Quality Score
87.0
Coffee scoring over 80 on Speciality Coffee Association scale is considered High Quality, Speciality Coffee.
Best Brewed As
espresso
This coffee is best brewed as an espresso (coffee shop type machine or a bean to cup). All our coffees can be brewed using any method, but this is our recommendation for a method which suits the coffee particularly well.
filter
This coffee is best brewed as a filter (cafetiere, pour over, aeropress, drip, etc.). All our coffees can be brewed using any method, but this is our recommendation for a method which suits the coffee particularly well.
Processing Method
This coffee was processed using the natural method. Post-harvest processing influences the taste profile. Washed coffees are brighter, naturally processed are sweeter and honey processed are somewhere in between.

More about this coffee

This fruity, sweet coffee offers complex flavours that can be enjoyed as an espresso or filter. Being a natural processed coffee, this isn’t your usual morning cup. Experience a creamy mouthful with hints of boozy cherry and chocolate truffle and a natural sweetness when making an espresso. Brew freshly as a filter to get a more syrupy cup and a cleaner finish of ripe cherry and blood orange.

Campus #4 is a delicious, natural coffee from the only country in the world that only produces Arabica coffee – Costa Rica. This special parcel is grown from Los Anonos, a 10-hectare farm located at the borders of the Rio Espino and owned by one of our longstanding partners Marvin Rodriguez who uses environmentally friendly practices for growing his coffee.

Union has been working with Los Anonos since 2009. Marvin Rodriguez, along with his brother Felipe and their partner Ricardo Perez, co-own the famed West Valley mill, Helsar de Zarcero. This mill has been championing environmentally friendly farming techniques that result in excellent quality and good yields. This coffee is expertly grown up at the heights of 1750 metres above sea level, carefully harvested and then mechanically washed and processed in the mill Helsar de Zarcero.

The artwork is beautifully designed by Ben Clark (@benclarktattoos ), a neo-traditionalist tattoo artist from New Zealand, who uses his distinct style to reflect the individuality of each origin using Costa Rica’s national symbol of wildlife, the white-tailed deer and national flower, guaria morada – just like the country, vibrant and beautiful!

Los Anonos

Costa Rica

Los Anonos is a small, 10-hectare farm located at the borders of the Rio Espino, Costa Rica. This small farm is owned by Marvin Rodriguez, who uses environmentally friendly practices for growing his coffee. This coffee is shade-grown and you’ll find an abundance of different shade trees at the farm, including the Annona tree, a fruit that grows in tropical climates - which gives its’ name to the farm - Los Anonos. Marvin creates his own organic compost for the trees using the coffee pulp and other naturally occurring materials including fallen leaves from the shade trees.

This coffee is expertly grown up at the heights of 1750 metres above sea level, carefully harvested and then mechanically washed and processed in the mill “Helsar de Zarcero”.
