Sweet and smooth

This Microlot is named “Jovenes” meaning “youth” in Spanish in tribute to the Young people’s groups who grew it. It is sweet and juicy with berry, soft citrus and cacao notes making for a well-structured and smooth cup.
Flavour Category
fruit fruit
High quality coffee has wide ranging, naturally occurring taste notes. The dominant flavour profile in this coffee is Fruit. Many coffees have fruity notes, not surprising considering that coffee beans are seeds of a fruit. Naturally processed coffees are often fruity as the method enables more of the sugars in the fruit are absorbed in the beans.
Roast
This coffee is a light roast. Roast level influences the flavour and body of coffee. Darker roasts are fuller bodied, lighter roasts brighter. The beans are light brown in colour (unsurprisingly), it will retain more of the natural flavour of the coffee. This can result in a higher acidity and may often show more fruit and floral notes. This roast style means the quality of the coffee shines through the best.
Quality Score
84.75
Coffee scoring over 80 on Speciality Coffee Association scale is considered High Quality, Speciality Coffee.
Best Brewed As
filter
This coffee is best brewed as a filter (cafetiere, pour over, aeropress, drip, etc.). All our coffees can be brewed using any method, but this is our recommendation for a method which suits the coffee particularly well.
Processing Method
This coffee was processed using the washed method. Post-harvest processing influences the taste profile. Washed coffees are brighter, naturally processed are sweeter and honey processed are somewhere in between.

More about this coffee

This lot is exceptional. Grown by a Young people’s Group as part of the Asprotimana coffee growers association, it testifies of younger generations’ desire to maintain the tradition of premium quality coffee harvesting in Colombia. Asprotimana has created a youth group striving to provide future farmers with education and tools to succeed as coffee farmers and grow high quality coffee. The 30 members of the youth group receive training on pruning, spraying and harvesting but also quality control and cupping.

Having supported Asprotimana’s Women’s group in the past with a previous limited edition coffee, this sumptuous premium microlot is another way for us to support this dynamic organization’s efforts to give back to its members in the name of better quality coffee.

This specific parcel is named “Jovenes” meaning “youth” in Spanish in tribute to the Young people’s groups’ efforts. It is sweet and juicy with berry, soft citrus and cacao notes making for a well-structured and smooth cup.

Asprotimana

Colombia

Timaná is a municipality located in the South of Huila, Colombia, about a 180 km away from Neiva. Surrounded by the Central and Cordillera Central and Occidental ranges of the Colombian Andes, the area boasts good soils and high altitude - the perfect environment for growing speciality coffee.

In 2001, ASPROTIMANA was formed, standing for The Association of Timaná, in Spanish. Back when they were founded, they were a co-operative of 32 farmers with a common goal to create socio-economic stability for coffee farming families in the region. Today, the co-operative has grown to incorporate around 220 members, with Robinson Figueroa as the co-operative’s general manager.

The farmers in the ASPROTIMANA co-operative are trained to high-standards in agricultural practices – not only focussing productivity and quality, but also environmental sustainability. These traits make ASPROTIMANA an excellent partner in growing high-quality Colombia coffee, and Union has been working with the co-operative since 2003. Asprotimana’s first cupping lab was donated by Union in 2003. Since then they have kept growing, focussing on quality and good agricultural practices. Expanding their facilities, improving their cupping lab and strengthening their organizational capacities focussing on youth. Now they have grown to an organization that strengthens the community and brings broader social change.

Asprotimana also supports women coffee farmers via The Women’s Group; this consists of 40 women who are provided with leadership and business training. As part of the training, they learn about roasting coffee for the local market, as well as preparation of drinks, desserts and sweets to build a café business. These women demonstrate to the world that women are more than capable of not only managing a farm, but truly succeeding in doing it. The association also has specific project to support young coffee farmers in the area, to ensure future for speciality coffee and enabling the next generation to make coffee farming a sustainable profession for them.

Speciality coffee has found a home in not only the farms surrounding Timaná, but also in the community of the farmers, with speciality coffee shop being built in the village - creating employment for local young people and displaying the delicious coffee which is grown in the area.
