Introducing Excelsa - a resilient coffee species and a UK-first release. Grown in Uganda’s Luwero District, it offers layered sweetness, dark fruits and cocoa notes, while pointing to a more sustainable future for coffee.
Roast
This coffee is a light roast. Roast level influences the flavour and body of coffee. Darker roasts are fuller bodied, lighter roasts brighter. The beans are light brown in colour (unsurprisingly), it will retain more of the natural flavour of the coffee. This can result in a higher acidity and may often show more fruit and floral notes. This roast style means the quality of the coffee shines through the best.

This coffee is best brewed as an espresso (coffee shop type machine or a bean to cup). All our coffees can be brewed using any method, but this is our recommendation for a method which suits the coffee particularly well.

Meet Excelsa - a coffee species with the power to shape the future.

Unlike Arabica or Robusta, Excelsa can thrive in harsher, hotter and drier climates. As climate change reshapes coffee-growing regions, this resilient species could safeguard farmer livelihoods and the future of coffee itself. This lot is grown in agroforestry conditions by smallholder farmers in Uganda’s Luwero District, it’s a UK-first release that highlights both Excelsa’s adaptability and its exciting flavour potential.

Excelsa offers a very distinctive flavour profile that sets it apart from Arabica and Robusta. The cup has layered confectionary like sweetness with the undertones of dark fruits followed by a spicy and cocoa like finish. With a caffeine content lower than Arabica you get a smoother cup with lower bitterness, it offers a deliciously easy-drinking experience.

This project is the result of collaboration with Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, Ugandan farmers, academics and exporters. Together we are exploring how Excelsa can help safeguard the future of coffee.
