Brimming with tropical sweetness

Brewed as filter, this coffee is bursting with tropical, mango-like acidity, boozy plum liqueur and a sweet, honeyed finish. Expect a deliciously juicy cup.
Flavour Category
fruit fruit
High quality coffee has wide ranging, naturally occurring taste notes. The dominant flavour profile in this coffee is Fruit. Many coffees have fruity notes, not surprising considering that coffee beans are seeds of a fruit. Naturally processed coffees are often fruity as the method enables more of the sugars in the fruit are absorbed in the beans.
Roast
This coffee is a light roast. Roast level influences the flavour and body of coffee. Darker roasts are fuller bodied, lighter roasts brighter. The beans are light brown in colour (unsurprisingly), it will retain more of the natural flavour of the coffee. This can result in a higher acidity and may often show more fruit and floral notes. This roast style means the quality of the coffee shines through the best.
Quality Score
88.25
Coffee scoring over 80 on Speciality Coffee Association scale is considered High Quality, Speciality Coffee.
Best Brewed As
filter
This coffee is best brewed as a filter (cafetiere, pour over, aeropress, drip, etc.). All our coffees can be brewed using any method, but this is our recommendation for a method which suits the coffee particularly well.
Processing Method
This coffee was processed using the natural method. Post-harvest processing influences the taste profile. Washed coffees are brighter, naturally processed are sweeter and honey processed are somewhere in between.

More about this microlot

Union has been working with Los Anonos since 2009. The famed West Valley mill, Helsar de Zarcero, has been championing environmentally friendly farming techniques that result in excellent quality. This coffee is expertly grown at 1750 metres above sea level before being carefully harvested and processed at Helsar de Zarcero.

This year, the lot is exceptionally good. So good that we asked if Marvin had made any changes to the way he processes the coffee. Marvin explained that the first day’s coffee is dried on raised beds in small piles before being spread out for further drying, allowing the coffee to undergo a small amount of positive fermentation. After 7 to 8 days on the beds, the drying is completed mechanically to give a consistent moisture level.

Enjoy your brew.

Los Anonos

Costa Rica

Los Anonos is a small, 10-hectare farm located at the borders of the Rio Espino, Costa Rica. This small farm is owned by Marvin Rodriguez, who uses environmentally friendly practices for growing his coffee. This coffee is shade-grown and you’ll find an abundance of different shade trees at the farm, including the Annona tree, a fruit that grows in tropical climates - which gives its’ name to the farm - Los Anonos. Marvin creates his own organic compost for the trees using the coffee pulp and other naturally occurring materials including fallen leaves from the shade trees.

Union has been working with Los Anonos since 2009. Marvin Rodriguez, along with his brother Felipe and their partner Ricardo Perez, co-own the famed West Valley mill, Helsar de Zarcero. This mill has been championing environmentally friendly farming techniques that result in excellent quality and good yields. This coffee is expertly grown up at the heights of 1750 metres above sea level, carefully harvested and then mechanically washed and processed in the mill “Helsar de Zarcero”.
